Key Testing Specifications for Diving Hose Assemblies Based on EN 250

The EN 250 standard specifies stringent safety, durability, and performance requirements for open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA). For diving hose assemblies (both High Pressure and Medium/Low Pressure), the core physical and environmental testing criteria are summarized below:

1. Burst Pressure Test

To ensure hoses can withstand significant pressure variations without rupturing, strict safety margins are required based on their specific applications:

  • Medium / Low Pressure Hoses (MP/LP): Typically connecting the first stage to the second stage regulator or BCD inflator. The standard requires them to withstand a burst pressure of at least 4 times the maximum working pressure, or at least 100 bar (approx. 1450 psi), whichever is higher. No leakage or rupture is permitted during pressurization.

  • High Pressure Hoses (HP): Connecting to the Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG) or transmitters. These must also withstand 4 times the working pressure. For instance, if the rated working pressure is 300 bar, the hose must pass a burst pressure test of at least 1200 bar without failure.

2. Tensile / Pull Test (Strength of Hose Assemblies)

During dives, hoses may snag on reefs, wrecks, or experience human pulling. The structural integrity of the hose and its fittings is critical:

  • Tensile Load on Hoses: Both HP and MP hoses must be subjected to a specific static tensile load (industry testing based on EN250 commonly applies a 100 kg / ~1000 N pulling force). Under this load, the hose material must not break, and the fittings must not detach or displace.

  • Tensile Load of Connections: This specifically tests the crimping strength at both ends where the metal fittings connect to the rubber or braided hose, ensuring an extremely secure bite.

3. Leakage Test

  • Under the maximum working pressure (or specific routine testing pressures, e.g., 30 bar for LP hoses on the production line), the fully assembled hoses are submerged in water or tested with precision pneumatic instruments to ensure absolutely zero gas leakage along the hose body and at the crimped joints.
